THALES

Thales in Singapore

Company Profile

Established since 1973, Thales has been present in Singapore for over 40 years and brings together the Aerospace, Defence, Security and Transportation (S&T) domains. Thales today employs over 600 people in Singapore. It has grown from strength to strength, building up industrial capability in avionics production and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO), enhancing its competencies in the fields of S&T and contributing to the local defence and R&D eco-system.

In addition to being a long-term provider of Defence Systems for the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Thales’ avionics and in-flight entertainment systems flies on-board world renowned airlines in Asia Pacific, including the Singapore Airlines. Thales has delivered sophisticated Air Traffic Management systems to the Civil Aviation Authority (CAAS) and is now expanding its S&T solutions beyond the Singapore Police Force (SPF), Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), Police Coast Guards (PCG), Changi Airport Group (CAG), Land Transport Authority (LTA), SMRT Corporation and SBS Transit to more customers in Asia.

The Thales Research & Technology Singapore, combined with our unique Innovation Hub, leverages on Singapore’s eco-system to design and develop leading-edge technical solutions. Both serve as effective interfaces between Thales experts, Singapore researchers and Asian end-users of Thales’ solutions.

- Aerospace

The Avionics business started in Singapore in the early 70s to support the expansion of the Airbus fleet in the Asia Pacific Region. As Singapore grew as an aviation hub for Asia-Pacific, Thales’ activities in Singapore started to include other aircraft types such as Boeing and ATR, and also increased our maintenance and repair capabilities for avionics and IFE equipment. Today, Thales in Singapore is a key production facility for the worldwide avionics market and also the regional headquarters for Sales & Marketing activities for commercial aerospace. The avionics production facility in Singapore manufactures flight control and display systems for Airbus aircraft and electrical power conversion for Boeing aircraft. Thales’ equipment flies on-board some of the world’s renowned airlines like Air China, Air Asia, Philippine Airlines, ANA, SilkAir and China Eastern Airlines. In August 2014, Thales’ avionics equipment was selected for 234 A320 aircraft belonging to Lion Air, Indonesia’s largest private airline and one of the fastest growing carriers in South East Asia.

- Security

On the Homeland Protection front, Thales has been working with the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) since 1995 when it was awarded significant contracts by the Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defence Force to develop incident management for their Operational Command & Control Centres and coastal surveillance for their Police Coast Guards. In 2010, in the field of Critical Infrastructure Protection, Thales was awarded a contract for airport apron surveillance by Changi Airport Group. Thales has also provided coastal surveillance systems to customers in South-East Asia, Africa and South America. In the field of Cyber Security, Thales is a world leader in cyber and cryptographic security products, assessment services, audit services, consulting solutions and specialised Cyber Security operation centres.

- Ground Transportation

Singapore is the Regional Integration Centre for Urban Rail Signalling and Integrated Communications & Supervision Systems. In 2011, the Land Transport Authority (LTA) selected Thales for its revenue collection systems for the Downtown Line and for the upgrade of its SCADA system on the North-East Line. In 2012, Thales was awarded 2 major resignalling upgrade contracts for the North-South and East-West Lines and for the Tuas West Extension. Thales had previously supplied revenue collection systems for the North-East and Circle lines as well. In December 2013, Thales launched the Regional Integration Centre (RIC) in Singapore to address Signalling and Integrated Communication & Supervision Systems, with a focus on innovative developments based on its world leading Seltrac®Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) solution and its versatile ATSSoft automatic train supervision and control system.

- Defence

The relationship with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) has also been strengthening as Thales has delivered equipment in air defence, communications and naval sensors to the SAF and continues to do so. Thales has also been developing leading-edge technologies with its research arms DSO National Laboratories and Future Systems & Technology Directorate (FSTD).

- Research & Technology

Thales Research & Technology Singapore was set up with the aims of complementing and leveraging Singapore’s R&T ecosystem, developing leading-edge technical solutions to meet the local requirements and contributing to Thales’ technology and product portfolios. It is Thales’ only corporate research centre in Asia. As the Singapore platform for localizing Thales technologies, it facilitates a transfer of technical knowledge from Europe to Singapore and serves as an effective interface between Thales experts and Singapore researchers.
