2nd Asia-Pacific Conference on Complex Systems Design & Management
“Discover, learn and share about complex systems engineering.”

Panel 3 by Daniel KROB

Panel 3 - Models & Methods for Complex Systems Design

Speakers: led by Daniel KROB with keynote speakers of the Session “Methodological State of the Art”: Theresa BROWN and Alan HARDING.
Date and Time: Thursday the 25 February 2016 – 11:35-12:00
Location: Auditorium of the Building 2 - Singapore University of Technology and Design, SUTD
Participants: opened to all conference participants

Topic

The panel will discuss on the key challenges to overcome and the good practices to develop in order to design “good” complex systems models.

Synopsis

The panel will discuss three questions:
1) How would you define a “good” model for a complex system?
2) What are in your opinion the key challenges for systems modelling in the near future?
3) What are for you the key best practices to follow when doing systems modelling?

Prof. Daniel KROB

Former student of Ecole Normale Supérieure, Daniel KROB got a Ph.D. (1988) and an Habilitation (1991) in Computer Science from University Paris 7. He is Senior Researcher at the French National Center for Scientific Research (CNRS), presently Institute Professor at Ecole Polytechnique. He was chair of the Dassault Aviation - DCNS - DGA - Thales - Ecole Polytechnique - ENSTA ParisTech - Telecom ParisTech Chair "Engineering of Complex Systems" since its creation 2003 to 2014. Daniel KROB worked in algebraic & enumerative combinatorics, algorithms for mobile telecommunications and finite automata & formal languages, before specializing nowadays in systems architecture, systems engineering and systems modeling.

He is the author of more than 90 scientific papers, 4 books and holds 2 patents. Daniel KROB founded and directed the "Laboratoire d’Informatique Algorithmique: Fondements et Applications" ( LIAFA) of University Paris 7 during 6 years. He was also head, during several years, of the steering committees of two major international conferences in combinatorics & theoretical computer science (FPSAC & STACS). Presently Daniel KROB is chairman of the evaluation commitees of the "Information Management & Modelling" departement of the French Aerospace lab (ONERA) and of the "Architecture & Evaluation of Systems of Systems" group of the technical expertise department of the French ministry of defense (DGA). At international level, he is also one of the 15 founding members of the Omega-Alpha honour association in Systems Engineering.

Daniel KROB is INCOSE Fellow since February 2014.

Theresa BROWN

Dr. Theresa Brown is a Distinguished Member of Technical Staff at Sandia National Laboratories. She is the lead for the Complex Adaptive Systems of Systems (CASoS) Engineering Initiative and the technical lead for the National Infrastructure Simulation and Analysis Center (NISAC). She serves as an expert advisor to the UK Infrastructure Transitions Research Consortium. The CASoS Engineering team develops engineered solutions for reducing risks in complex adaptive systems. Applications include evaluation of regulatory policy design and operational planning for incidents that impact population health. NISAC is a Department of Homeland Security program which provides analysis in support of infrastructure protection decisions. Theresa’s technical expertise is in conceptual model development and decision-making under uncertainty using vulnerability and risk analyses and probabilistic performance assessments. For more on CASoS Engineering applications see: http://www.sandia.gov/CasosEngineering/.
